AI Adoption Score vs Microsoft Viva

Microsoft Viva measures how people use Copilot and asks them about it: the Copilot Dashboard in Viva Insights counts Copilot use, and Viva Glint and Viva Pulse run Copilot surveys. AI Adoption Score asks people how they use AI, whichever tools they use, and what holds back the ones who don't. If you run Copilot, the two fit together.

Not Microsoft's "AI adoption score". The Microsoft 365 admin center has a report with that name, worked out from how many days each licensed person used Copilot in the last four weeks. AI Adoption Score is an independent product with no connection to Microsoft.

Where Microsoft Viva is stronger

Real usage, without asking anyone. It records what every licensed person does in Copilot, app by app. We only know what people tell us, with checks.²
Already included. The Copilot Dashboard comes with Microsoft 365 and Copilot licences, so there's no new vendor to approve.⁷
Benchmarks. It sets your numbers against similar companies'. We have no cross-company benchmark yet.^{2, 4}
Usage next to results. With at least 65 Copilot users and 65 others, Viva Insights sets Copilot use against business results you upload, though Microsoft notes the differences aren't tested for significance.⁸
Privacy thresholds. Small groups are hidden by default. Our results show from the first answer.^{3, 5}

Using both

Use the Copilot Dashboard to see which teams use Copilot and how often. Then find out why: the 360° AI Maturity Assessment (opens in a new tab) gives every person and team a level across usage, skills, impact, culture and vision, and AI Adoption Barriers (opens in a new tab) shows what stops the people who don't use AI, and who can fix it.

If people also use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or pay for AI tools themselves, Viva doesn't count that use. Our surveys ask about all of it.

Questions

Is AI Adoption Score part of Microsoft 365 or Viva?

No. The names are close, the products aren't. Microsoft's AI adoption score is a report in the Microsoft 365 admin center: each licensed person's active Copilot days in the last 28, divided by 12, averaged across the company. AI Adoption Score is an independent product that measures how people adopt AI through surveys.¹

Does AI Adoption Score read our Copilot usage?

No. It connects to nothing in Microsoft 365 or anywhere else. Read the two side by side: Viva's numbers for use, our reports for the reasons behind them.

We already run Viva Glint. Why another survey?

Glint's Copilot Impact template has 21 questions about how Copilot changes people's work, four of them fixed. Ours cover AI in general: levels, skills by tool, barriers with owners, and worries about AI. To keep survey load down, run AI Adoption Barriers only in teams where Copilot use is low: about 5 minutes per person.⁴
